After their semi-final exit against Enfield in 1988 it was Barrow who had another fantastic run in the FA Trophy after their 14th placed finish in the GM Vauxhall Conference. The Cumbrian side had beaten Norther Premier League Premier Division champion's Colne Dynamoes in the semi-final who were, at the time, rising through the divisions thanks to financial investment from Chairman Graham White. They won their title with 102 points with their nearest challenger's being Gateshead on 76 points. They were due promotion to non-league's top division but their Holt House ground failed ground grading conditions and the club folded in the summer of 1990.
They faced Northern Premier League Division One Champions in the final who were the first step three side since Bishop's Stortford to get to the final. Leek's previous best run in the Trophy had come in 1985/86 when they played an amazing thirteen games. They beat Spalding United (after a replay), Sutton Coldfield Town (after a replay), Buxton, Dudley Town, Rhyl (after a replay), Macclesfield Town and then had an epic third round battle against Wycombe Wanderers which went to a third replay after 2-2, 5-5! and 1-1 draws. The Chairboys won 1-0 to go through to the Fourth Round.
Thier run to Wembley for the final had seen them win against Hednesford Town. Moor Green, Newtown, Spennymoor United, Nuneaton Borough (replay), Telford United (replay), Darlington (who went on to be Conference Champions) and Stafford Rangers in the semi-final. Only eleven games!
Kenny Gordon scored two gals with club legend Colin Cowperthwaite getting the other goal. Cowperthwaite scored 282 goals in an incredible 704 games for Barrow AFC.

Witton Albion fans must of been sick of the sight of Kidderminster Harriers after their semi-final replay defeat in 1991. Harriers had also beaten them in a second round replay in 1989/90. Harriers were in the second final after their win in 1987 and they came up against a Wycombe side managed by Martin O'Neil who had finished in fifth place in the Conference and were to go on to get promotion to the football league in 1993.
It was Wanderers debut season at their new Adams Park ground and their second appearance at The National Stadium. Their fans had had to wait since 1957 when they last played at Wembley in the FA Amateur Cup against Bishop Auckland. Wanderers goalkeeper John Granville played with a broken thumb with Mark West and Keith Scott scoring Wanderer's goals in front of a huge crowd of 34,842 people. Glynn Creaser (now on the coaching staff at MK Robins in the Spartan South Midlands League Division One) was The Chairboys Captain on the day.

After their semi-final defeat to Kidderminster Harriers in the 1991 Witton Albion, now playing in the GM Vauxhall Conference, got to the final by beating Marine (in their second semi-final) in the final four.
Marine, under the management of club legend Roy Howard, were very unlucky not to get into non-league's top division in the 1990s. They went on to win the Northern Premier League in 1994 and 1995 but their ground was deemed unsuitable to host Conference football at the time and failed the grading. Howard was in charge of the club from 1972 to 2005 and a total of 1,975 games.
Unfortuantely for Witton Albion they came up against Colchester United who after relegation from Division Four in 1990 were one of the biggest names in the non-league game and certainly had one of the best and most impressive squad.
They had finished in 2nd place to Barnet in the GMVC in 1990 and won the title (only on goal difference to Wycombe Wanderers) along with the Trophy in 1991.
The crowd of just under 33,000 were made of of around 23,000 supporters from Essex - Colchester's goals came from Steve McGavin, Nicky Smith and USA International Mike Masters who is a cult figure amongst U's fans - He only played 15 times in 91/92 but his 7 goals helped them to promotion.
Witton's side included Carl Alford who in 1996 Rushden & Diamonds paid local rival's Kettering Town £85,000 for his services.

Sutton United (maanged by ex Wycombe boss Alan Gane) who finished 5th in the Isthmian Premier had won 2-3 at Adams Park in the first leg in front of 5,600 people. Sutton's goal scorers were Peter Byrne and Steve Browne (2). The second leg at Gander Green Lane was a more one sided affair with Wanderers running out 0-4 winners.
Wanderers, after missing out on promotion to the football league on goal difference in 91/92, were only the third side (Wealdstone and Colchester before them) to complete the non-league double with a comfortable win over Runcorn whose bad luck continued to run in the FA Trophy.
